Значительная часть выпадающих здесь осадков расходуется на испарение и просачивается через трещиноватые известняки, которыми в основном сложена поверхность. Летом реки сильно мелеют, а зимой наполняются водой и даже иногда выходят из берегов. Главные реки — Рона, По, Тахо, Дуэро и др. В Зарубежной Европе много озер, их скопления образуют целые озерные области в Скандинавии, в Польском Поозерье, в Альпах. Котловины большинства из них имеют ледниковое или тектоническое происхождение. Есть карстовые, вулканические и запрудные озера. Самое большое по площади озеро Венерн (5500 км2) находится на юге Скандинавского полуострова. Самое молодое озеро — Балатон — расположено в тектонической впадине. Особой красотой отличаются горные альпийские озера (Женевское, Боденское, Комо и др.). На севере Европы не только много озер, но и болот. Средняя Европа богата подземными водами.
